If I were asked about 10 movies I consider the best of all time, I would put The Lord of The Rings trilogy as one in the list. Yes, they are really 3 movies, but they deserve to be in the list as one because the whole trilogy was made in one-time production. Peter Jackson, the director, decided to shoot the whole trilogy right away. Interestingly, he intended to release each part of the trilogy each year, starting from 2001-2003.

The trilogy was so well adapted, that even though some parts from the original novel had been omitted in the movies, it didn’t change the ambience and the main elements of the stories at all. The novel series was written by JRR Tolkien, and it was also considered as one of the best-selling books of all time with more than 150 million copies sold.

However, what amazed me more is not how great the movies or the books are. I was also astounded by the production of the movie itself. The production took about 3 years in total, in which the filming time itself took around 10 months! It was indeed a laborious production, but those were not meaningless efforts. It is currently recorded that the trilogy won at least 479 awards (including the most prestigious, the Academy Awards) and received 800 nominations. Even today, the trilogy still ranked as one of the highest-achieving box offices in the movie industry.

When I thought about how long the production time was, I couldn’t help but think about all the sacrifices made by all the crews in the set, including the actors and the actresses. I can’t imagine how the actors and actresses had to memorize the whole script under the pressure of bringing Tolkien’s lifetime legacy on their shoulders. It was definitely not easy. However, on the other hand, I cannot imagine either how privileged they must feel being involved in the project. Now… reflecting on our lives as believers, shouldn’t we feel the same way knowing that we have been “admitted” as the citizens in the Kingdom of God? Shouldn’t we feel even more privileged knowing that we were part of the God’s own royal family? At the same time, shouldn’t we remember that being “royals”, we carry the responsibility of this precious, noble way of life representing our King and His Kingdom? Shouldn’t we prepare our lives as such in order to get the eternal “awards”?

I remember one of the books I had once read saying that our lives on earth are just like a rehearsal of the actual show. As pictured using the movie trilogy production, we’re currently “in production” to prepare the big picture called “eternity”. During rehearsals, all the cast and crew members involved are not to take their roles half-heartedly. We’re meant to take Christianity seriously.

We need to go all out in preparing ourselves for eternity and we need to really understand our roles in the Kingdom: who we are and what we should do. How we live needs to show to the world that we belong to eternity and to the Kingdom. Furthermore, borrowing the term from movie industry that we’re currently “in production”, this means that we need to be productive for the Kingdom. We need to constantly win souls in our day-to-day lives until the time we reach the Great Show in eternity and we receive our great award from the King Himself.
